A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,- Write-Up

 "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," is a beautiful short story written by the Colombian write Gabriel García Márquez. The story, written in the form of magical realism, depicted the themes of human cruelty and exploitation on a supernatural being. The story follows an old man with wings, found in the courtyard of a couple. The reactions of people to him is not one of admiration, but rather of curiosity, greed, and ultimately, neglect.

The story opens with Pelayo and Elisenda finding the old man in their backyard. They believe that the old man is an angel, and captive him in their chicken coop. Their initial compassion quickly diminishes as the old man's presence attracts attention of the others. They fix an amount to see the angel, and thus the old man becomes the people's entertainment. 

As the old man's condition worsens, the people's interest turns towards another woman who has been changed as a spider by a thunder storm. Later, the old man becomes a burden for the couples also. This indicates the fickle-minded attitude of the people. Ultimately,  his wings, once symbols of divine power, now withered and decaying. 

The story concludes with the old man's departure. It is a silent commentary on the human tendency to exploit the extraordinary and disregard the suffering of the vulnerable.
